Hey, that's the Beowulf that I've read!
Should I feel inadequate for having only read one Beowulf? People have opinions on different translations, and I feel left out sometimes.
the front matter indicates that it's "Detail from the Cervera Bible, MS Hebr 72 / Werner Forman Archive / Bridgeman Images" (and you're so right, it's beautiful)
I remember liking Heaney's translation a lot! I just wish I remember whose translation I read in HS so I could like, go and compare or whatever
That's the Beowulf with the old English by the modern! We listened to the story in old English while reading along in highschool. It was pretty cool!
Then we read Grendel and no joke we all had to write fanfiction about the saga (just like 500 words) to get us to really think about the setting.

Oh I didn't know they had a version of the Heaney translation out with the Anglo Saxon. I feel like the Heaney translation was the New Hotness when I was in uni, but I had three different classes in my second year and they all had three different versions of Beowulf. I wonder which if any I still have kicking around?
I just picked it because it was the one on the shelf! 😄 That's so many times covering Beowulf in quick succession, though...
If you're not familiar with the Headley translation I would highly recommend it! I wrote a little bit about it in a long post I made about performing literature.
