I'm sorry to say but the actual answer is "basically be Sherlock Holmes", aka "notice/catalog most things and have an extensive and esoteric catalogue of knowledge to draw on, and be good at seeing connections between seemingly disparate facts".
Second order would be "just about everyone likes me", so I could probably get a pretty decent picture of what happened just from talking to folks.
