SNW is "TOS with too much budget", down to the sometimes cringey contemporary politics
I definitely like both, to be clear, but is it really a Star Trek without weird filler episodes

not exactly that, but it's a really well-formed group of characters (including a bunch that are also in TOS). if you're a fan of TOS I strongly suspect you'll like Strange New Worlds!
