the project has ramified and metastasized but yes, the core of it is "American food (and especially diet) culture is, at its core, a secularized expression of American Protestant Christianity"

and obviously there's all kinds of nuance at a lot of places in that sentence (thus the topic sprawl), but that's the essence of it
