trying to read about (white) Christian nationalism is so exhausting because it feels like a lot of books on it came out post-Trump and are all "!!! Trump?? religion race morality? cult weirdos out of nowhere wrong about history" and, yeah, elements of that are true

but this has been going on much longer, and it really feels more interesting to me to look into why and where their beliefs come from than just "whoa I just noticed these people, did you know they're wrong?"

Right there with you — there's no way that Trump's flavor of Christian nationalism is new, so much as the logical consequence of the Southern Strategy making room for Christian dominionism to take root in the 80s and culminating in W's Graham-style dominionism in the 00s. Even that only scratches the surface, as you say.

(Sorry, it's an almost reflexive rant on my part...)
