today i have illustrations from two books centered on the same theme: MEMENTO MORI, which as we all know translates to "remember that you will be bothered by a skeleton". the books titles are: "De kapelle der dooden, of de algemeene dooden-spiegel. In welken alle menschen, van wat staat of rang zy zyn mogen, zich tot hun nut konnen beschouwen; om indagtig te zyn het memento mori, of gedenkt to sterven; Ten einde met eenen lagchende mond, of met traanende oogen, al naar't hun gelieft, de nietigheit en ydelheit des Leevens te leeren bertragten en veragten. Zynde het laatfte Werk van den beroemden Pater Abraham van Sta: Clara. In zyn Leeven Barvoeter-Augufylner Monnik, cn Keizerlyke Hafprediker. Twede Druk. Volgens den Origineelen Druk uit het Hoogduits vertaalt, vermeerdest, en met Kopere Platen verciert." and "Emblems of mortality : representing, in upwards of fifty cuts, Death seizing all ranks and degrees of people : imitated from a painting in the cemetery of the Dominican church at Basil, in Switzerland : with an apostrophe to each, translated from the Latin and French : intended as well for the information of the curious, as the instruction and entertainment of youth : to which is prefixed a copious preface, containing an historical account of the above, and other paintings on this subject, now or lately existing in divers parts of Europe"
both were published in the 1700s, which is why their titles are Like That. i highly recommend perusing the full collections of illustrations of Bothersome Skeletons. they made me chuckle.

bonus illustrations, because it was so hard to choose only four-
