With the fact that you're a shadow the hedgehog respecter and a weeb game fan, I'm surprised you didn't know about this earlier. I guess it was sorta a hidden gem for a specific type of person looking for freeware fighting games on their college computer. i.e me
i've never been plugged into the doujin fighter scene. Melty is the closest i get but even that had already long escaped any chance of qualifying for the category by the time i heard about it. i think it's mostly because it's easy to do something like "open up a Neo Geo romset and flip through every one labeled as a fighting game" but it's not so easy to do that for PC-based doujin stuff
some sites made it a little easier. You get down far enough into the rabbit hole and you find doujin sites that let you filter by game type. I think that's how I found out about Hinokakera the first time
