"It's oft hard to hear the voices telling you to give up when you've no hearing to begin with," was the snarky admonishment of many a proctor. Of course, Ji-yeong is quite happy to let others talk behind their back - They're too busy leading from the front - for weal or woe.

Psychiatric Evaluation:
Ji-Yeong is the perfect candidate for high-risk stations due to a tendency to treat even the most clearly forlorn hope situations as recoverable. Childhood trauma has set them up to always search for the best in crises, and their religion/cultural upbringing emphasizes the need for struggle as part of growth. They are charismatic in the near-extreme and have an aura that nearly-begs people to follow.
History:
Ji-Yeong Stojanovska was born in the 2nd litter had by their mother in their collective family unit. The oldest of the litter, they took quickly to being an informal leader of their age-group in their small community. Born congenitally Deaf (having about 25% of normal hearing capacity for a felinid), Ji-Yeong grew up learning sign language native to their community as their primary language, speaking the spoken tongue of their community as a secondary language.
Ji-Yeong had a very healthy childhood relative to their environment (growing up as a colonist on a very hard-worn, desert planet with little amenities), a peace of which was shattered when they turned 17. A group of bandits from off-world raided their home, killing several people including their biological parents. They were taken out of their home, beaten near to death, and then had a piece of iron forced down their throat, scarring it and permanently damaging their ability to speak.
Their survival was contingent on their admission into a very secretive research project that offered to tend to their wounds and protect their remaining family in exchange for their unconditional consent to a study - the intent of which was kept a secret. Their living family consented, handing them over to the research corporation for the study.
They were experimented on in one, very simple way: They had magic physically implanted in their body. Their eye, replaced with a magic focus, resulted in their innate capacity to utilise magic. When manifesting, their eye, along with half of their face, part of their neck chest & their entire left arm transform.
Their reward, for surviving the experimentation and being a viable test candidate, was to be given a comprehensive education, fast-tracked through a bachelor's & then a medical doctorate, before finally receiving a captaincy docket after a post-graduate program.
