I'm the stream boy. This is where I share funny Twitch clips sometimes.

I managed the herculean feat of getting to level 200 in the Fall Guys season pass earlier this week. The costume pictured above was the final reward, and it's one I really wanted to get. It's purple, it has a cool hat, a cool coat, and a cool robot arm--I love all of those things! But getting to level 200 is a real drag, especially since you only get cosmetic rewards every 33 levels past 100. I didn't enjoy completing the season pass at the pace I did, but I had to!

Because all unearned cosmetics disappear when the season ends! If I hadn't unlocked the purple admiral set in time, I would've never gotten a chance to unlock it again. I find this very annoying, and, to be frank, I'm of the opinion that this should probably not be legal. If you pay money for a cosmetic in a game, you should get access to it, period. And if the developers are dead set on making you unlock it after your purchase, the opportunity to unlock it should not be allowed to expire.

Season passes provide a really good value handshake between players and developers. The players get a number of cosmetics that is very high for the money spent, at least in comparison to other microtransaction options. On the other side of things, the developer gets to make a set of cosmetics that they know will have a very high attach rate. This, I think, is fine, but season passes that expire tilt the advantage a little further in the direction of the developers: they get to count on increased activity from their playerbase during the season, because players have a ticking clock hanging over their season pass purchases. As nice as that guarantee is for the developers, I think it is unconscionable. If I pay money for a set of cosmetics in a video game, don't put a countdown on unlocking them--frankly, I'm already a little annoyed at being asked to unlock them at all. You already have my money, so let me earn my funny little costumes in peace.
