Assuming "last few decades" means "since the millennium," I thought Mononoke (2007) was a striking approach to doing period horror. Mushishi (2005-2006, 2014) superficially treads some of the same ground but does so in a much more relaxing and easygoing way; the two are almost opposite emotional sides of the same coin. More generally, I've never been able to figure out why I don't hear more about either Planetes (2003-2004) or Kaiba (2008); each may not be for everyone (and those circles might not even overlap that much), but I feel like there are a lot more people that each is for than know either exists.

Also, it must be said that Redline (2009) is one of the stupidest things I've ever seen and I love it to pieces.

Gleipnir. If you get past the cringey fanservice bits, it has massive trans energy for me.

I also really enjoyed Skeleton Knight for its not-shitty protagonist. He murders a band of r*pists in the first five minutes, and it's all uphill from there.
