So Good Smile Company are releasing the first official model of the robot from the unacceptably pulpy 2004 manga and anime Kannazuki no Miko, and they put Himeko and Chikane kissing in the foreground of the box art. Evidently at least some people involved in this understand exactly how the series is remembered.

I remember downloading an episode from animesuki back when it first came out and near immediately recognizing that — as someone primarily interested in the robots — I wasn't the audience the show had in mind, lol.

I'd almost certainly appreciate it more if I watched it now, but at the time I thought that the romance and the robots where too disconnected from each other.

In hindsight, if the pilot were one of the girls, I'd have probably been on board!

in reply to @JuniperTheory's post:

So bear in mind that I last watched this show in, uh, 2008, but, from memory:

  • it is gay, though there is nominally also a male love interest
  • the girls don't pilot the robot
  • today it would get called Problematic a lot, for several different reasons
  • it's not terrible to look at, but it's not especially well-made, and was made during the early-2000s digital paint trough

Like, say, Fight! Iczer One, I think it's something you'd find a bunch of people today would regard as, at once, something important to their personal history and not something they'd go around inflicting on unsuspecting bystanders. Perhaps one measure of that historical/iconic quality is that the illustration used in the ED is widely parodied and has its own tag on Pixiv.

A mess of a series and definitely can tell the manga circle behind it do porn doujins (they did a great Persona 3 yuri one), but the anime is actually pretty solid and has a satisfying ending. Even the male love interest turns out to just be a really nice dude who when he realizes the girls are gay is like "cool I'll go kill The Devil for you two"

It's capital P problematic, but also had a lot of impact in the yuri scene.
