for anyone who doesn't know the context, way back in the day when Fallen London put out it's first Special Stories that cost real money to experience their content, it added one called The Rubbery Murders. Also, every year the reddit also has a poll to rank how good or bad every real money locked purchase is, ranking them all by how interesting and cool they are
that story was consistently rated as the worst thing you could buy on the entire website. it hit bottom of the rankings every single time. everyone who played it said it was just... really bad and not worth it, along with being SUPER racist against the rubbery men. This was weirdly common in early fallen london, where they were often mostly used for "haha british people are Racist" jokes with no consideration to the fact that they're an oppressed minority? Like, an actual quote from the story is "It's a squid in a hat. You should be seen to make an effort, but who cares what it thinks? Pretend to interview it and go."
In fact it was so bad that last october they deleted the entire thing from the website, you can no longer play this story at all because it Sucked So Much. (This wasn't an attempt to hide it, either; they also gave the wiki editors full permission to upload all the text to the wiki for archival sake)
...and then, come this month, Chandler Groover marches in with his new Exceptional Story story about working with the constables to investigate a mysterious serious of murders involving/being pinned on a rubbery man. He really just wanted to prove you could make that sort of story interesting. By my measure, he succeeded; the new ES is FASCINATING. Just an incredibly funny lineage to have.
