404media has talked about how they'd get their articles automatically scraped, run through a thesaurus by an LLM, and reposted elsewhere, and putting up the free subscription wall slowed that process down
that's the most charitable motive i know about, i'm sure some of it is about collecting salable/advertising data
if you toss the link into the archive.org wayback machine it will usually let you in (internet archive copies are made with code that mimics a search engine crawler and news sites generally want search engines to be able to read the full article) (extension for getting there from your toolbar: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/wayback-machine_new/ )
