The problem with viewing media only through the concept of 'representation' is that characters are no longer individuals meant to resonate with those who are similar but instead are seen as ambassadors of their real life counterparts for the least generous, and most bigoted viewer.
At one point 'representation' meant: is this type of person present in fiction; are they represented? But now it seems the meaning has shifted to 'they are a representative.'
