I like playing games with high amounts of replayability/customizability (meaning roguelikes, mostly, but also rhythm games), and sometimes also automation sims since I like programming so much that I do that professionally.

I wasn't really in the mood to stream it last night, but I started in on the International Timing League 2023 set of stepcharts, with online score tracking and everything! It's hosted by a cool crew of dance game community members over in the International Timing Collective discord, which can be found over at their website.

If you want to track my progress even when I don't stream it, you can follow my entrant page on GrooveStats!

All of the charts are largely focused on what the Dance Games Community (DGC) call "tech" charts — charts which focus on technical/technique-based skills and interweaving/intermixing them as the difficulties climb higher.

Some examples of tech skills include Footswitches (where you step on the same panel with alternating feet, usually only switching feet twice in a row to stay forward-facing) and Brackets (where you step on two panels at once with a single foot, bridging the two panels across the bracket holding those panels in place), among a number of others.

In any case, I started off decently strong for being away from dance games and 4-panel tech for a long time. Played 12 charts in total (many of which were replayed to zero in on a Global Offset) for 16,863 Ranking & Total Points!

For reference, the highest scorers are upwards of 483,246 Ranking & 996,146 Total, and as of right now (6:30PM Central US [UTC-4] time on the 21st of March, 2023) I'm in 151st place of 429 entrants, and 97th among non-males (listing by only Female and Unspecified gender) or 33rd among only women (about 50 of those who have joined so far including myself).

I think Ranking Points only take into account your top 50 charts or so by either difficulty or score..? Not entirely sure how that works, per se, but it's a way to put more emphasis on your biggest accomplishments. Total Points still accounts for everything you've done, though, so even grinding for a 100% on a difficulty 7-9 chart can still be of some benefit if that's your goal.

My goal is to get back to being able to regularly play 11s and 12s by the end of this season, which goes through May or June? I'm not here to be competitive, per se, but I'll be happy with getting myself into some form of routine to play dance games regularly once again since that tends to leave me in a better mood for handling other function.

Internet woes

My internet was out for 3 hours or so, including a blip 2 hours before the full outage while I was watching the pinball biopic: Pinball: The Man Who Saved the Game (it's really, REALLY good). And then after a while of taking care of some other business, it became really late, but I still wanted to keep to some sort of ***day schedule, even if that meant staying up late into tonight. Start that twice-a-week schedule so I can maybe make it thrice a week.

Session write-up

Not really much to say about the session. I tried another 10 (Fancy Footwork), minorly upscored some of last session's attempts, and otherwise kept getting annoyed with the Global Offset.

What was especially annoying is that I felt like I'd really honed it in for a song or two, and then it fell off again. I'm not sure if that's just because certain songs might not be properly synchronized or what.

Plus, if they're not properly synchronized and it's not just my computer setup (I know @Spootaloo had troubles in 2022 I think with interactions between the game and possibly Voicemeeter..? granted, I don't think I tested the same song twice and see if it gave different results in the long run...), I don't know if it's common to change the song sync locally so it matches better with one's setup or if that's "cheating" and I should just adjust my stepping to the poor sync like if it were an in-person setting...

Body health = Good!

Thankfully, after the first session, my body has not really yelled at me too much in soreness. I'm not sure if that says more about the Ring Fit sessions I used to do for my primary home fitness possibly being way more than I should've been doing, or if I've just done enough dance game sessions by now to remind my shoulders & legs how to work.

Only things I still need to work on are my stamina, speed, and balance, then, which are the hardest parts of dance gaming to build (back) up just due to how long they take to be noticeable.
