getting depressed by how dire the state of tech hardware is lately. so much of the interesting tech design work is either totally obscure or being wasted by companies shoving crap software into it. looking at the rabbit r1 and the spotify car thing with sorrow. those devices looked unique and intentionally designed and they're completely pointless now because the software shoved into them was utterly garbage and now they're going to just become e-waste.

god. fucking imagine what could've been with the rabbit r1's funny little scroll wheel. imagine a purpose built digital audio player with a UI designed around it. context dependent interactions like scrolling thru lists of albums or artists, or being a volume wheel on the now playing screen. a few support buttons for selecting or going back. maybe the scroll wheel can click in to select something or act as play/pause. imagine a unique passcode entry where the scroll wheel can act like the rotary dial on a physical lock and you can set it up with custom scroll distances back and forth or something. there's so many options that could be genuinely interesting or delightful to mess with. hell it could even be a fun little fidget thing when the screen's off. you could just spin it with ur thumb idly for fun. i wish we lived in a reality where stuff like this is what gets made and not garbage useless """AI assistant""" e-waste.

yes i realize this hues close to the original ipods but like. this would be more Physical and could still stand out on its own

It’s too bad that the hardware is so unimpressive technically speaking. I’ve seen people run stock Android on it and it turns out to be a very cute little phone-like device but it falls short of being something it makes sense to spend $200 on and has terrible battery life. If i ever see one for $30 I’d totally go for it for fun though.

it's so upsetting that the actual like, internal specs are that trash because that almost solidifies the thing as future e-waste with so little potential for modified software to run on it. maybe someone can come along and pull some magic and create custom, useful software for the device but i don't know how feasible it is to hope for that... but gods i want it to happen anyways
