As i avoid most of these games I don't wanna come in making big sweeping unfair statement, but I think the easiest way to put it is like.... If someone is copying all the surface level details of a souls game, I become highly suspicious that we like the same things about the games. Meanwhile I love Armored Core which has nothing to do with that entire style. I just... love Fromsoft's authorial voice.
It's like trying to copy old Final Fantasys by having Active Time Battles. No reason you can't do that and you might find people aching for exactly that, but that's not really the reason I liked any of those games.
At the same time though, I'm making my classicvania clone, because honestly "Belmonts fight dracula!!" for me isn't actually really why I like them(not that I don't appreciate CVs goofy lore, but I'm more interested in the design methodology". So like I still think the combat of souls games are the least interesting part (it's just zelda, kids), a whole bunch of people seem to feel the way about it that I feel about Castlevania... which is fine?
idk this is hard to answer this is like "What's wrong with all the fantasy that tried to be like Tolkien and what are they lacking?" and it's like... idk, both everything and nothing at the same time?
