cohost, my safe space, has betrayed me

@Kayin

If you come at me like "Castlevania 64 is actually GOOD!!" I'm like okay I don't agree obviously but hell yeah!!!" but if you say old games should be in 4k!!!! I'm going to boo you like it's a bad comedy show 😔

@Kayin

I can't believe a whole giant essay about Castlevania 64 is vestigially attached to a giant argument about game upscaling, I can't believe that throw away add on was the thing that got people going, here, on luddite cohost. I am in shambles.

Of course it's subjective so no real shade but subjectively I'm like "How????"

I wonder if there's a difference between folks who played older games on real hardware first vs emulating them with upscaling? Like if all PlayStation and N64 games were upscaled when you first played them maybe that affects your personal tastes.

RIGHT like I didn't wanna argue because to what end??? and I'm pretty sure they don't follow me so I figured I'd joke about it but like yeah... How???

The idea was like "You can appreciate the models and textures!" but that is so missing the forest from the trees. What are those textures trying to DO? Like you can't look at that horribly out of place billboarded statue in HD and be like "ah I can see the real artistry now"

Hi, I'm the person you've subchosting about and I was just like "I appreciate being able to see what developers of old games did on a closer level." You also left out my thoughts about how the PS2 and more cinematic PS1 games were the exception to this view, where the heavy use of effects in those games get modded out of HD modding and such.

And I'm just...really confused? This post read really hostile and I was just sharing my own thoughts on something that was reposted on my timeline. I wasn't trying to start discourse or anything, I just made a single post and that was it.

So two bits here. The first part is, as this thread goes on it's not about you like there are MOUNTAINS of arguments going on, most of which not stemming anything you said. Also I'm not mad at the people I'm disagreeing with either, or who are "discoursing". Including you.

But I was being flippant, with the assumption it was harmless fun. But it got back to you and I feel like a thoughtless dingus so while I still, in a good humored way, think its NUTS you prefer the scaled version like I'm like... genuinely sorry for giving you bad vibes!! I should have been more considerate and fair.

Like I said, it's subjective, so that you like it is fine and valid.

WRT "seeing things on a closer level", I disagree that higher native resolutions or texture upscaling does that. There's a lot of unnecessary fetishism around CRT filters and "the way the developers intended it to be seen" but the core assertion that game developers were making their games for the environments that they were getting played in at the time is still true. Upping the resolution moves you further away from the actual vision of the original developers.

Just wanna second the CRT thing. I'm pretty pro "try to be authentic" but the far end of of the authenticity spectrum gets CRAZY fetishistic and kinda gatekeepy.

I just want people vaguely in the ballpark 😭

lol it's tricky sometimes though cause then some games have bits where the slow down is factored into the balance!!

I can give people crap for too many frames but sometimes but sometimes it's pretty dire so I can understand... even if I usually just suffer 😔

It's the part of your post that was easiest to express a strong opinion on!

Opinions about like, where less-than-popular games lie on the scale of "stupid rock" to "unpolished gem" require nuance to form, effort to articulate, and experience with games meeting the criteria!

Opinions about upscaling vs accuracy to the original experience just require... uh... you used an emulator at least once! They also tend to be as strong as they are subjective!
For instance, I personally can't stand scan-lines! They're supposed to be for verisimilitude, but shit never looked like that on my old CRTs! So it's just like... you're blocking out half the image for no reason! Maybe if they alternated between even lines and odd lines every screen refresh?

Anyway, I'm solidly in the sharp pixels camp rather than the "hi res post-processing" camp. Need that integer multiple scaling for things to look right to my eyes.

lol you're right. I thought this was the softball cause if you wanna talk scanlines and shaders and all that like that is a HUGE tarball with no clear answer. What IS authentic is so murky, but I thought "hey don't do the thing that is purposefully EXTREMELY AND OBVIOUSLY INACCURATE" was at least a reasonable line!

A FOOL! I AM A FOOL!
