So I had graduated highschool and was taking a semester off just like hell yes this is life I'm living, I'm turning 18 hell yes. My mom wakes me up. She says the pentagon is penta-gone, says the towers are gone. We turn on the TV. To my blurry eyes who was just sleeping in, it looked like a good damn missile. We're being invaded. We're under attack. Oh shit, I'm draft age (I actually both already was, while also not being eligible for the first round anyways, but tired teenage mind). If I was at school I would have seen everything play out slowly, but being I had just woken up, it hit me like a pile of bricks. Being in NY didn't help. Yeah, sure, Long Island, so not close to the city, but close enough for it to feel even more personal.
Anyways, in a sense... once I understood the reality of the situation I was kinda relieved? Like I was still upset, confused, and scared but like it's not nearly as bad as thinking we need to get the sandbags out to defend the house.
We debated going to the chinese buffet for my birthday. We did not. The terrorists won.
