I remember you talking about liking fromsoft's souls games for their content in a post I can't find. Was wondering if you could go further into that and how other soulslike are lacking in that department.

As i avoid most of these games I don't wanna come in making big sweeping unfair statement, but I think the easiest way to put it is like.... If someone is copying all the surface level details of a souls game, I become highly suspicious that we like the same things about the games. Meanwhile I love Armored Core which has nothing to do with that entire style. I just... love Fromsoft's authorial voice.

It's like trying to copy old Final Fantasys by having Active Time Battles. No reason you can't do that and you might find people aching for exactly that, but that's not really the reason I liked any of those games.

At the same time though, I'm making my classicvania clone, because honestly "Belmonts fight dracula!!" for me isn't actually really why I like them(not that I don't appreciate CVs goofy lore, but I'm more interested in the design methodology". So like I still think the combat of souls games are the least interesting part (it's just zelda, kids), a whole bunch of people seem to feel the way about it that I feel about Castlevania... which is fine?

idk this is hard to answer this is like "What's wrong with all the fantasy that tried to be like Tolkien and what are they lacking?" and it's like... idk, both everything and nothing at the same time?

too drunk to make this cohesive

i hate how much work i put into my office job that's now worth nothing. thousands of problems solved in creative ways; all worth nothing. i walk out, i'm left with absolutely fuck-all. it doesn't matter that i was clever, it doesn't matter that i cut out hundreds of man-hours of work, it doesn't matter that i figured out how to write scripts that interfaced with our shitty systems to solve problems. nobody cares. none of it matters. i wasted ten years of my intellect. it went absolutely fucking nowhere.

every single job is like this. if you let your neurons turn on for even a second, you're being robbed of all the specialness the universe put into you. it'll all be drunk up by the company like a fucking sponge and then pissed away into nothingness the moment you leave. working hard is pointless. nobody will ever care that you did it unless you're an architect and what you make is so big that nobody can ignore it

Thank you for giving me the words to articulate why Nine Sols feels like a solid platformer that can't stop getting in its own way trying to be Sekiro and Hollow Knight in ways that don't serve it, literally days before it came out

oh gosh I'm hitting games with strays 😰
