the mini-series establishes that it was attacked while it was still a museum ship. You had retired high ranking military personnel, veterans, and volunteers who were trained for a lazy day of maintaining the ship so schoolchildren could visit it during their 'The War' subject coverage and so war nerds could come and talk about your fighter planes.

so it was crewed by, essentially, the entire staff of the Battleship New Jersey Youtube Channel and that's why they were such a mess. But someone was gushing about things to me today and I realized they didn't know the miniseries existed.

to be fair, the miniseries is absolutely horrendously paced. Fantastic worldbuilding and setting the stage but it is a slog.

starting on s1e1 "33" as an in media res sure is one hell of an entry for a lot of people and I don't knock them for that
