like forget the fact that the sentiment i'm about to describe literally permeates our culture if you just look for longer than two seconds, but i can speak to personal involvement in provincial politics so i speak to my experiences
a recent post on Facebook described a homeless population in Edmonton growing as a result of soaring rent other cost-of-living costs while wages stagnate. 90% of the "top-rated" comments on this post (top-rated never means best, it means most engaged) are some form of homelessness discrimination. "Lazy degenerates," "good-for-nothing drug addicts," other purely fucking evil descriptions of people these unhinged white people have never met in their lives.
naturally, being that i am a shit-disturber and i also hate myself, i respond to this sentiment with simple "what the fuck is wrong with you"s and "you're so right, homelessness IS a choice! i'm gonna choose to live on the street dealing with police ripping my shit apart and sleeping in minus forty weather RIGHT NOW! THAT SOUNDS SO RUGGED, SO FUN!"
and it never goes anywhere, because white settler Canadians are some of the most psychotic white people you will ever meet.
For Americans, you can spot the colonialist bullshit immediately; they wear ugly Gildan graphic tees announcing their politics off their chest, literally.
For Canadians, it's hidden by better PR. "Oh, Canada has better healthcare than the US, they don't have extremists like the US, and they haven't voted a Conservative into federal leadership in a while, and even the Conservative guy isn't a lunatic like the US' is, either!"
keep in mind, you are comparing Canada to what is literally a banana republic right now.
Our healthcare is falling apart at the seams due to provincial government's ineptitude and corruption. Saskatchewan's education system is the worst in the country because our education minister is giving money to the private Catholic school system while underfunding our public schools and strong-arming our teacher's union with advertisements that portray teachers as ungrateful, selfish and money-grabbing. And yes, we do have radical lunatics in our population; the only reason i'm comfortable going out looking the way I do is because I know all these lunatics just have a really loud bark with no bite, these assholes love to scream and shout but they're all fucking wimps and will run away from a physical confrontation. I know this because I've been shouted at from across parking lots by old white men who only shout the obscenities they do because they're climbing into their oversized lifted pickups and can't be hurt in their overpriced pavement princesses.
Thing is, this place flat out sucks. I used to believe staying here was always in my future, and that I would never in my life move to the USA. but these days, i'm not so sure. This country sucks, in some cases it's even worse than USA is, and literally as I speak i'm being denied healthcare as a direct result of the Saskatchewan Party underfunding our health sector. I literally can't book an appointment with a physiotherapist; i've tried for the past two months straight, calling as required on Tuesdays at 8AM, and never being able to get through to book until all the appointments are booked up - because the phone line is jammed with the dozens of other people trying to make an appointment too.
so the literal only thing keeping me in this country is moot. i wanted to be sure i was cared for if i broke my arm and not have to go into medical debt over it, but given my experience with the healthcare system in this country over the past 15 years of neglect from our federal and provincial governments? i might as well be living in fucking America anyways.
i mean, im just fifteen minutes from the border. geographically speaking i'm already half-american.
so, no. this place sucks bad. it's not worse than america, it's not better than america; it's just another country full of white people who don't know what the fuck they're doing, constantly pretending they know what they're doing, and ruining the fucking planet while failing to do anything at all.
and the people who vote for them all unironically think homeless people are homeless because "they're given too many crutches."
because as we all know, if somebody gets more help than they need, they go homeless and stay homeless. just ignore the rich executives with six yachts and twenty McMansions and about sixty billion tax-evaded dollars.
