I've come upon three world#.wld files in an old backup dated 2011 which I suspect to be Terraria worlds. Any idea how I can open them if they're so old?

Try a couple programs from https://terraria.wiki.gg/wiki/Map_viewers - I think old world files are still compatible up to the current version but I could be wrong. Your backups are either from late 1.0 or early 1.1, and you could probably move them into your worlds folder to play on them (though you won't be able to access some 1.2+ content without items from other worlds)
