hey all! we've seen a bunch of reports of image uploads hanging forever over the past day, and we're starting to look into it.

so far we're confident of the following things:

  • the issue is real and we can reproduce it in-house.
  • it began occurring in the late evening UTC on the 20th. (edit: wording changed from "just before midnight UTC on the 21st" because talking about the midnight of a particular day is confusing.)
  • it does appear to occur more often with larger image files -- the comments in this thread about the size threshold being 500kb sound right, but we haven't spent much time reproducing this yet.
  • it isn't related to a code or operational change, because we haven't made any of those to any part of the site related to image upload.
  • we've put in a support ticket with the company we buy the underlying file hosting service from.

we'll let you know more once we track it down and get it fixed. thanks as always for using cohost, and thanks for your patience during a very busy week. :eggbug:

Anecdotal evidence: Copying an image from the clipboard seems to almost always, if not always, break, whilst a file drag + drop works fine.

I know there's some differences with how this presents the file and I don't know the details, but it's part of a workaround + maybe, possibly helpful info.

the most surprising thing for me to hear is that this is a new issue. I've had this issue since as long as I can remember. especially with large images, and especially with copy pasting images instead of uploading them from hard drive

good to know it's on your roadmap! I had a 1.1MB png file hang yesterday while trying to attach two other images to my post and it tanked the other two with them. I was able to get around it by swapping in a ~300kb jpeg version but I lost my alt text each time the upload failed :(

How come users like lexyeevee are allowed to deadname people on this website without repercussions? Because she's friends with staff? I know for a fact several people have tickets reporting the deadnaming, but NOTHING has been done. I made an account here to escape transphobia and corrupt moderation, not fall into its waiting arms. On top of that, why is simulated CSEM fine on this website as long as you stick an animal snout on the kid? People who partake in any kind of CSEM, even simulated, are not the kind of people I want to rub elbows with as a survivor. These, in addition to the searingly ugly unchangeable color palette tbh, are a few main reasons I'm reluctant to make use of my cohost account.
