Years ago, if you wanted pizza, you could just go to the website and order it.

You'd pull up Pizza Hut or whatever, make your garbage-ass pizza, push checkout, and PH would dispatch one of their internal drivers to deliver your order. The driver was an actual employee and the whole system was largely one piece. When it went wrong there was a very simple place to go (the place you ordered). I basically never had problems with this system.

At some point pizza companies decided to fuck up the one thing they were good at, delivering pizzas, because why not farm that out to a third party.

Last night we decided to order some papa johns. We moved recently, so this is a new one. Turns out they farmed delivery out to a third party, DoorDash.

It went poorly.

9:00 PM: Ordered.

9:20: "Out for delivery". The tracker is from DoorDash and includes a GPS marker, so we can watch for their arrival and pick our stuff up. The estimated delivery time is six minutes.

9:30: The driver drives around our apartment complex for a while without doing anything. The doordash tracker website does not scroll and was clearly designed for a maximized 1920×1080 browser window; I keep mine full width but reduced height, and it makes the "delivery driver contact" section completely offscreen. There are no scrollbars.

When I notice this, I make an attempt to call them. I also notice that the tracker only lists our street address, and is missing the apartment number.

The driver does not answer. The phone call actually redirects to another number, tells me that they are unavailable, sends me to a mailbox, and then tells me the mailbox is full. The driver eventually leaves and drives away.

9:50: I call the store. It turns out we are actually the second customer to call about this particular DD driver not delivering things. While this call is going on, our order is marked as delivered while the mark is at least 3 minutes away from us. The store is going to remake our order and deliver it themselves. I also confirm that somehow the website dropped our apartment address when ordering. I check the website to confirm that I put it in, and on my account the address clearly has the apartment number.

10:30: With no sign of any update, I get ready to call the store again. They actually call me first to tell me it's on the way, but their (PJ's) driver forgot the 2-liter of soda I ordered, so they'll be sending another Doordash driver to deliver that, and an extra one for the trouble.

10:50 PM: The PJ driver arrives. By this point I'm just glad to have it and I slip the guy a $10 for the trouble.

The 2-liters of soda never arrived, of course.

What an utterly miserable experience, but I'm sure someone got a big raise for offloading the cost to a third party.

The thing that really sucks is that the people who actually run the local store probably had the third party delivery foisted upon them by corporate and most likely hate it as much as you do
