Ok just bc I'm a nerd about this type of thing:
Tbf this global study found 40-70% of people fantasize about some element of bdsm (from what I've read in other sources women and queer people make up that 30% difference, although this particular study only differentiated between male and female) with 46.8% of people having performed some act and 22% only fantasizing. In this study, a whopping 26% of people stated they had an active interest in BDSM as a whole and 7.6% self-identified as regular practitioners.
To put that in perspective, after analyzing data of online communities and online discussion, this study below found that approx 33% of people have a body parts fetish and 30% have fetishes for objects associated with a body part (gloves, masks, shoes). Of that 33% about 46% have a foot fetish lol. Making foot/shoe fetishes a fetish "only" 15% of all people have. I've seen other studies return much higher general %s for foot fetishes though, something like ~25~35%, I'm just too lazy to hunt them down lol. Tip of the iceberg!
So, statistically, pretty normal! Sex & fetish is just so stigmatized people don't like talking about it lol. Considering these collection methods all require some form of self-reporting, these percentages could be several points higher if stigma and self-policing around these topics weren't a problem.
Things that are statistically less common than doing BDSM, and probably even petplay alone:
Being a red head
Being trans
Being Puerto Rican
Percent of US population identifying as Italian American
Percent of people from New Jersey that claim to have Italian Ancestry
That last one is a really doozy if you're from NY/NJ
