Sometimes robot sometimes deer.
It should be noted that the original story wasn't meant to be some worldbuilding thing - it was just a self-contained alien abduction kink story :P
Oh yes, of course, it's not a bad thing, just something that doesn't line up with my preferences for this type of story.
I think now that “worldbuilding” wasn't the best term for what I actually meant here, I don't necessarily dislike stories that lack “deep lore” or a large universe. A better term might be “worldview”, HDG isnt trying to answer questions like “Why do the Affini do the things they do?” (Not what the story is about) or “How does Elvira actually feel about it” (Not really a meaningful question within the narrative).
It's a good story that I could definitely enjoy of I read it again, it just wasn't the sort of thing I was looking for when I did read it.
Very fair! If you're interested in another excellent author's exploration of those sorts of ideas in the setting, I highly recommend Kanagen's No Gods, No Masters - it's a full book so it's a bit longer, but it's one of the best in the setting.
