There were a few attempts to license and reskin Puyo Puyo for a western audience before they just kind of gave up and kept the original Japanese designs. One that struck me lately was Qwirks for Windows from early 1995, which was one of several puzzle games Spectrum Holobyte put out that had Tetris designer Alexey Pajitnov's face glued to them to try and make the Tetris lightning strike twice.
