yeah this sounds like a suit trying to appease a shareholder by talking them down
Oh this would back fire so so hard, fangames and hacks are easier to take down since they're big projects that require a lot of time an energy.
But adult content you're asking for trouble, you're best bet for that is to just ignore it because if you end up trying to fight it, people end up making more of it in response.
I'm kinda hoping they actually try to do this because it'd backfire spectacularly.
Putting the porn aside for a second. This sounds like they also want to stop like, most parody involving their IP. "What if the mushrooms were drugs and Mario got high off of them" isn't exactly funny, but it does fit the description of "inappropriate use of characters that has potential to damage the brand." Which as OP put it, good fucking luck.
