The most compelling thing about Heathcliff is that it's a mythopoetic universe where everyone wears their hearts on their sleeves (or, just as often, hats). More than characters with internal lives, Heathcliff's cast are like chemicals that, when mixed, act in predictably intriguing ways. Heathcliff is not a complex character in the same way that Zeus is not a complex character. That's why there is almost always someone witnessing the events in the panel, watching this odd world go round and giving us a sort of oral retelling in the caption.
