If I've ever talked to you in person about Skin Deep's music I've described it as "a fever dream" But right now it's just my fever dream

But right now it's just my fever dream

What do your fever dreams sound like?

Trailer:

some existing or in-progress songs:

  • Enya-ish parody by a music artist who is a cat (Katenya, voiced by my cat Grendel)
  • Corporate propaganda singer-songwriter coffee shop music
  • Corporate propaganda synth-pop with melodica solos (see trailer)
  • Corporate propaganda in the style of a campfire sing-a-long
  • 1960s-ish experimental-radio music
  • Space cowboys (coming soon)
  • A love song with slight existential horror vibes
  • Spy-Vibe Music
  • Jingle Ads for Freeze Dried Space Food (for cats)
  • Stoner rock for cats (catnip!)
  • Bad fake classical music with the worst midi
  • Public radio stingers

I love that this soundtrack is an outlet for me to be pretty unserious about the content of the music I'm making, I'm just having fun fleshing out the world of the game!

When you go to listen to a fever dream of a soundtrack, what is it you hope to find? A polka with ocarina and vintage electric bagpipes? A lullaby for cats? A heartfelt duet with vibraphone and singing saw?

I want to know what your fever dreams sound like!

Disclaimer: I might not use these suggestions in a literal sense, but I am deeply curious to hear from people! :host-evil:

for my fever dream soundtrack, i feel like it would be mix of familiar music but slightly off. like a guitar slightly outta tune, a drumset that sounds real but has so much reverb it sounds like its in a different room, vocals but slight auto-tuned Out of key

a while back i was really sick and had random songs from jibjab videos stuck in my head, but it was just the chorus and it never went anywhere. "good god, he's coming back to serve a second term, good god, he's coming back to serve a second term" over and over.

some other highlights include very intense pitch bend abuse (thanks to my midi keyboard having one of those things that detects where your hand is, the d-beam apparently???) and horribly distorting the audio on a tape deck (kind of like that 1 potato 2 potato punk video that went around a while back, except with a 606 and a shitty old keyboard that sounded absolutely awful) unfortunately i recorded over the tape that i had the track on.

well, there was that one time, when i had a really bad fever and after having watched red dawn with a pal, i was awake but literally feverdreaming about some sort of world war unfolding around me in my little 15sqm dorm room xD

i have a bunch of songs i go to when i think of a sound for a "fever dream soundtrack", but they're a lil different in mood and energy so i'll try to split them a bit:

"fever dream" as in: vivid and ethereal, feeling very out there, not too intense but easy to get lost in

"fever dream" as in: odd and unexpected, maybe unnerving at times though quite upbeat or enjoyable in others:

"fever dream" as in: intense or scary, more like a nightmare, but in a way that feels difficult to keep track of that keeps it feverish

I was blown away by the dawning realization the hazy, dream-pop song in the trailer that sounded so close to a real band I would enthusiastically listen to was a song about following protocols. The dissonance between how niche and cool and good the music is and the content of the lyrics adds a sense of delirium to a genre that is already washed out and hazy. Music that's a little too weird be colonized for corporate propaganda being used for corporate propaganda is in and of itself a really nice trick, and I think the more inappropriate the gulf and more unhinged the energy of the song is the more it's emphasized.
