i think (if i understood the article correctly) that microsoft republished the original article on some kind of aggregator service, and added the poll there
Yeah, that's right. The Guardian published the article and had nothing to do with the poll. MS added it on their republished copy without telling them.

Ugh yeah. It's a weird thing with archive.today, I get it sometimes (and only in some browsers??), and I've seen other people complain about it.
I found an archive.org copy of one of the two links and switched to that, but they don't seem to have caught the other one.
