the infamous United Fruit Company, later rebranding itself "Chiquita", did a lot of high-pressure marketing of bananas like they were a health food—there are some samples of advertising on this old blog post about Chiquita's marketing in 1957, though potassium is not specifically mentioned in these ads. if anyone created the "bananas = potassium" myth, it was probably the United Fruit Company.

btw 1954, three years before that ad campaign I just cited, the UFC helped orchestrate a fascıst coup in Guatemala. ~Chara
