a helicopter is a contraption. no arguments on this point. it's shocking they make a sound other than "1930s toontown awooga car struggling to turn over"
- rotor held on by single, large nut and milspec thread lock
- steered by using a rigid plate to suggest where rotor blades should go
- most energy converted to noise
- piloted only by levers, dials and valves
- fragile and prone to explosions
- vehicle with the most catostrophic accidents in it's class
a helicopter is a steam locomotive
Watches (smart or otherwise) are gizmos, as are cheap knockoff portable game gizmos like you might find on Wish
A gizmo is a device of dubious quality, intent, usefulness, and statistical likelihood of explosions.
| Is large and can cause grievous bodily harm | Is tiny and intricate, possibly made by elves | |
|---|---|---|
| Works in general, could be the subject of a 1950s technical filmreel | Machine | Device |
| May fly apart at any moment, should make cartoon noises | Contraption | Gizmo |
this is a rig (the actual, formal title) and nobody would disagree that it is a contraption made of a series of devices and gizmos. these are facts
a rig is composed of any number of machines, contraptions, devices, and gizmos. a machine is composed of any number of devices and gizmos, but a contraption may be composed of any number of devices, gizmos, and machines.
importantly, a rig may also contain other rigs, thus creating super-rigs.
in this way, the universe is a sort of super-rig, composed of things like stars which are certainly machines, but also of things like humans and other forms of life, which are certainly contraptions. and of course a planet and it's ecosystem is a rig in and of itself.
