Looking at how this thing works, so far it seems like the only information the average person will get to see about a post is how many comments it has and what they say. There is still a function somewhat equivalent to reblogging, but it seems to only be accessible by the op, the reblogger, and the reblogger's followers. Not sure though, haven't gotten anything my mine reblogged (rehosted?). here's hoping Photomatt dies of hammer car explosion.

Here's a quick and rough primer on how cohost differs from tumblr and other similar sites:

  • there is no list of who reblogged1 or liked a post
    • you get notifications when someone does. and can turn that off.
  • reblogging with a tag puts it into the "feed" of that tag if you're browsing it; it's not just top-level posts only here
    • you may want to enable the setting for collapsing long posts by default if tags you like get long chains in them.
  • Numbers™ are intentionally obfuscated or outright hidden2
  • tags are no longer erased from the original post on reblog3
  • comment replies are made to the post you're replying to, not the OP
  • instead of a blog it's called a page; and you can have secondaries here too
  • Markdown supported if you want to doll up the post a bit
  • commit CSS crimes if you really want to make your posts look weird4
  • people only see posts if they're following you or browsing one of the tags on said post
  • there are multiple miscellaneous tags used to emulate a global feed if you're into that sort of thing edit: apparently it was meant as a joke that people took seriously. it's being used. there's a bunch of them. some of them make no sense (how is "The Cohost Global Feed (Transgender)" different from, say, "transgender" as a tag?). I honestly hadn't looked at that tag in ages on the assumption it would be full of too random of stuff to be readable, but apparently it wasn't really meant to be a thing anyways. you want a good feed, follow people you like their posts. or curate a list of tags, which can be viewed all-at-once kinda thing in the bookmarks.

  1. Officially called "share" here, but you'll also see "rechost" and "rebug".

  2. pros and cons of which can and are discoursed elsewheres

  3. particularly handy for CW/18+ post sharing to not lose context(s)

  4. which can be fun, but say goodbye to basic accessibility.
