one more cute disaster… it’s hard here in paradise

Something I've wanted to do for a while and never gotten around to doing (because free time + I only have engine-based programming experience), is dig into some older games that supported player-made decals, like Armored Core and Ridge Racer Type-4, and build a little tool that could convert images into something these games can read.

I've done this once before (screenshots above) for Ridge Racer Type-4 — both figuring out how images are stored on memory card, and converting an image to inject into a save file... though I did this by hand, manually converting an image via hex editing, lol.

I've never built standalone tools outside of scripts for Unity, and image processing is a big question mark.. so this idea is likely going to continue only being a fun thought. 💦 It was cool that these games offered the option at all though, even if the tools they offered were pretty cumbersome to use with gamepads and the results never seen outside of most players' homes.

Surprisingly large amount of games supported this too considering they naturally devoured the memory card the teenie tiny baby that it was. Cool Boarders (at least #2), Kaze No Notam lets you edit the colour of the literal per tri shading, pretty sure Rage Racer also did? For some insane reason Tricky Sliders let you customise the BACKGROUND TILE of the menu screen.
