A couple years ago I wrote some code—in R, of course—to convert publicly available elevation data into ridgeline plots to make maps. This is one of my favorites, the Organ Mountains of New Mexico.

Thanks! I need to clean it up a lot and provide some examples, but there's a version of the map-making (but not animating yet) code as an R package here. Check in like a week and I'll probably have updated it.
Code is spruced up and probably as user-friendly as it's going to get. There's some example code up on the repo too.

I manually grab the elevation data as rasters from the USDA NRCS Geospatial Data Gateway and pull it into R with the package 'raster'. There's some steps after that to convert the data into a data frame formatted to use with the packages 'ggplot' and 'ggridges' to produce the map. I need to update it but the code lives here.
This is really cool! I had just started experimenting with a topo data 3D model exporter but this is extra neat!
fingers crossed I started going down this road here, I’m not sure where it’ll end up. The funny thing is I am not actually running any 3D software yet so the roads are added by doing a 2D projection of google maps onto the preview of the 3D model and then tracing it (again in 2D) for that clean map look. I’ve really gotta do that second step in 3D to be accurate… 😅

this is very cool art but also is very cool in a "hey, that configuration of shapes feels really familiar" sense. I live in Southern New Mexico and make the trip out to Las Cruces fairly often, going through this exact range, and it is so cool to see it abstracted like this
I'm glad you like it! I used to live in Cruces and love the Organs because they're ruggedly beautiful in a way that says, "You may appreciate me, but I don't give a fuck if you live or die".
