you've probably already seen it, but the new defunctland video is amazing. i think it's his best work yet, even better than the fastpass video. it actually genuinely almost made me cry. even if you have no nostalgia for or memories of disney channel or the disney channel theme, it is worth watching, for reasons that are almost impossible to explain without spoiling it. it's just incredible.

i think the part of this that will stick with me the most is the part where one of the interviewees describes how the disney channel started broadcasting unbranded "fish facts" a full year and a half before finding nemo came out so that kids would be into fish when the movie came out

as well as how casually that woman just participated in brainwashing children, man was pixar even aware they were doing that lol. the banality of evil no spoilers but that little twist at the end was really beautiful :') I love bread tube so much!!!!

psyops for kids! hahahahaha

Disney is, across the entire company, constantly straddling this line. The whole thing runs on magic, which in practice means "knowing what you want before you want it", and often the easiest way to do that is to get you to want something. I wholeheartedly believe that's how the parks work, though I've never been to one. This whole "you're being taken care of" vibe can genuinely come off as sweet and loving, truly...and also incredibly creepy and greedy. Being welcomed in with open arms so that you don't notice your pocket being picked as you enter. But like, I still want to! I fully know I'm going to be fleeced for all I'm worth, and I fully expect to spend twice the ticket price on things while I'm in the parks, and I still want to go! You go to the magic show, you go see the circus, because they're masters at this, getting rinsed is part of the fun! And as long as it's contained, I want it to exist. But of course, it's not very contained anymore...and sometimes it is, but the container is bigger than you might expect...

I maintain my ad blockers out of paranoia.
