Recently I’ve lost of most of my interest in Oxygen Not Included, a game I’ve been enjoying quite a bunch — the developers have announced that they’re gonna implement external timed cosmetic drops into the game. In a single-player colony building sim. Despite not being an AAA game, despite being a game in a relatively niche genre, the Industry (derogatory) found its way into it anyway.
In a comfy single-player game where part of the charm is tinkering with the aesthetics of your colony, you now have watch out for time-limited fomo bullshit, otherwise the game you paid for, and the expansion you paid for, is just gonna be incomplete I guess 🤷 You better buy the game now and create your new account and click the fomo drops, even if you don’t know that you wanna play it yet, lest you miss out! Video games!!
And of course, this is just a small example of a small thing, all those awful ~gaming~ practices are just the default by now and even smaller projects are getting roped into using them. They’re not designed to make video games more interesting, thought-provoking, curious or engaging. They exist to siphon as much time, attention and profit out of you, in any abusive, addictive, immoral way they can come up with. It’s the shiny machine gun falling out of your body as you lose your last life, prodding you to put in another quarter before the timer runs out; all grown up into a billion-dollar abuse machine. someone please stop video games
