That’s crazy! I love fencing but haven’t managed to be organised to watch any of it. I used to fence foil and sabre but I don’t think I ever really learned epee - I’ve definitely fenced it casually but never competitively

When I joined the fencing club, we all started on foil. Pretty standard. At one point, one of my friends mentioned us switching to epee because there's "no rules."

Then I saw how the epee grips reminded me of FFVIII gun blades, and I was immediately sold. Stuck with it ever since and I got half decent. I almost never fenced competitively.

My last hurrah was a regional tournament. Placed around the middle of the division, but that was with not having fenced or practiced all summer. I even beat the top seed, so I felt good about how I left the sport.

I also recognize a guy on the men's foil team as he also was still in university when I was a freshman. Since then he's won world championships and is hoping for Olympic gold.

My school was so good at fencing that when we, as a club, would travel for tournaments our competitors would treat us with far too much respect on the fencing strip. To our advantage 😅

I remember facing the Navy team and going 2-1 against their three fencers. Afterwards, one of them came over excitedly saying he was happy just to have an opportunity to fence us. My dumbass had to say, "Oh? We're not the team. Just the club." The poor guy was so devastated.
