noooo! if it works okay for about half an hour I suspect that the problem might be something as simple as "the heatsinks are full of dust so it's overheating"; might be worth picking up some canned air and cleaning out the vents
tried that this morning and it still gets super hot :( Are there any other ways to reduce overheating?
hardware-wise, one of the fans might've died and you could fix it by replacing it; it's also possible (especially if you dropped it or something at some point) that the thermal paste connecting the CPU to the heatsink has dried out / shifted around and needs to be reapplied. if you feel comfortable disassembling and reassembling it, you might be able to fix it yourself, but otherwise I would recommend taking it in to a computer repair shop.
im borrowing my brother's super cool gaming desktop computer for a year soon so i think im just gonna give up for now. also i take this laptop miles with me every day and have done for almost 2 years, so it has been jostled and dropped several times. do computer repairs shops cost much? i have like 0 money
don't have first-hand experience but assuming you don't have a mac, the fix for either of these things would be about an hour of labor and $10-20 in parts, probably $50-75 altogether at most. which laptop is it?
"Aspire A515-56". I feel deeply embarassed that I managed to spend £700 on it, but i knew absolutely nothing about computers 2 years ago and left choosing a laptop to my mum, who knew even less.
looks like ifixit has a couple repair guides if you want: https://www.ifixit.com/Device/Acer_Aspire_A515-51G
looks like the weirdest thing you need for disassembly is a guitar pick to slide around the edges of the case to undo the retention clips!
