cobalt core is a time loop mystery story like outer wilds but instead of an adventure game, the time loop is a roguelike, which, like, 10/10 theming
oh yeah, im not using my cobalt core image here... needless to say, ive already done zhat~
In that case, may I recommend Universal Paperclips from a few years back? It's the parable of the paperclip-optimizing machine that takes over the world, except its an idle game and you're the machine.
Edit: oh! If you want a short roguelike specifically, play Dicey Dungeons, its my favorite at that!
dang, what's the most obscure thing I can recommend...
...uhhhhh have you played shapez yet? maybe you'd like taiji? zoombinis?
taiji i havent played yet but it is on my wishlist... jeeze, are we just zhe same? are you some long lost twin?
We're both adhd furries on cohost who enjoy roguelikes for the plot. Maybe we're both into the same erotica too? I'm running out of favorites to recommends
Mice Tea! Monster Mind! Bosom Buddies! Univeral Acceptance! uhhhh Julie Becomes a Magician's Assistant!
Monster Mind is a zoombinis-like with horny non-anthro pokemon. Not my kink but the writing is so good.
Bosom Buddies is a literotica series, its fluff porn about a happy polycule. Feels a little MLP-esque at times, which bringe me to
Universal Acceptance, an mlp "clopfic" about a male human surrounded by hyper anthro ponies. There's some magic fuckery and now everything he does is "normal", meaning he can basically gaslight anyone on command. The story both plays this for kink and takes breaks to talk about the good parts of being normalized and the real danger of gaslighting.
The Julie series is a bunch of Deviantart-era TF erotica with surprisingly good descriptions of girls getting magically cut in half; I list it here because it's probably the highest obscure*favorite ratio thing I've read.
Lenna's Inception maybe? Though since the main story mode lacks permadeath it's a bit of a loose fit, but it does still give a randomized map and optional one-dungeon side modes
also the roguelike i go back to most often is PlateUp, it doesn't have a story but it does have an excellent crafting system and a lot of great mods
depends on the core mechanic you're looking for, and if you're looking for completionist-friendly stuff (i.e. sub-200hrs for all achievements/milestones)
of stuff we have completed that qualify as completionist friendly that we've 100%'d
vampire survivors and other similar autoshooters
Risk of Rain 1 (2d Platformer, Returns has way more stuff and we're still working on it)
Cult of the Lamb (Hack & Slash
Heretic's Fork (Tower Defense/Idle, some of the challenges are a bit... obnoxious)
Risk of Rain 2 (3D Looter Shooter)
