watched the FNAF movie over discord with some people
It's... maybe a 5/10? Not a movie buff in any regard but. Yeah. 6/10 if I wanna be REALLY generous.
Anyways, thoughts beyond simple number (no plot spoilers):
The physical effects were STELLAR, they absolutely nailed the animatronics and overall the physical effects were really great and it makes me wish Literally Everything Else was better!!
The CGI effects (which I mainly noticed with one fucking "character") were.... bad. very bad. Like "why did they still go with this?" bad.
The writing with horrible overall imo, but mainly it was just EVERYWHERE. As if they wanted to do a bunch of plots and couldn't decide on one so they sorta... Combined everything into a shoddy mess (which is very authentic to Cawthon so, yknow)
The acting is aight. Main actor and the Big Bad are really good imo, but it's hard to reeeeally tell because of just how fucking bad the writing is normally.
The movie is NOT a horror movie, it's a thriller with a little tension (that always get released before it could properly build) and a FUCKTON of comedy, which... Felt out of place to me.
Again with the writing, I just gotta hammer home like. They... Go against the classic "Don't explain the monster" thing that a lot of horror does, and lay almost everything out TWICE in the movie. no details on it but. pretty much everything that should have been left as question marks was... just described kinda hamfistedly
The references varied but most were... a lil too strong? But eh that's w/e, it's a brand movie so I cut a little (er... actually generous amount imo?) slack.
They also like, never ever imply or explain certain things that didn't leave me or anyone else watching spooked, but instead left us going "...WHY???" I'm not gonna like, super spoil it even though it's in the INTRO of the movie, but... The prop there, the horror movie thing, not only looked straight out of Saw, but I will say... it's never even like, mentioned????? it is relevant but... just like a chair someone sits in is relevant. Still so confused on why it was even added and why of ALL things that wasn't explained.
There's a running gag in the movie that ties into the comedy thing which... Just detracts even more from any horror vibes. Along with other weird stuff that left us scratching all our heads like "Wh... why????" not to the movie, but to the directors.
I... Honestly am just, disappointed. They not only could have, but SHOULD HAVE, removed like. half the fucking plot and built on their stuff. they have like... I think at least four different connected subplots??? And they're POORLY connected.
If you ask me? They honestly should have tried making it JUST the office to try and spice things up, or maybe make it mainly the office and maybe the rest of the building in lesser focus. Have it mainly be based on the first and third games, either be a random dude or hell, still have the main character be... Well, the games' main character, and connected to the spooky shit and trying to get closure! Like they could still have that core struggle there AND have it actually be... yknow, HORROR? With tension? Dread? A looming fear alongside uncanniness? I mean, hell, the guy barely used the cameras in this movie, he- he didn't even stay in the office most of the time!!! most of the movie isn't in the office! AUGH!
I DON'T KNOW WHY I AM SO FRUSTRATED AND RAMBLING, I'M NOT EVEN A FNAF FAN! I'VE ALWAYS BEEN ANNOYED BY THE GAME ""STORY"" AND HAVE NEVER EVEN BEAT ONE OF THE GAMES! THE FANDOM ANNOYS ME AND IT'S ANNOYING THAT I'M SO FRUSTRATED AURGHGHHGHH
I will say, if there ever is an MST3k clone that gets popular in the future, this movie ABSOLUTELY will be one of them. PERFECT movie for that.
it surpassed the fucking Mario Movie
it surpassed OPPENHEIMER.
AUGH.
