this has existed for awhile and it's pretty good. on mobile you'll only be able to install it on Firefox Nightly, but hey there's an option. Just use the firefox PWA if you use chrome for everything else. If you forget where it is, you can always check the third party tools section of the support forum that the patch notes mentioned a few weeks ago. (it isn't mine i just found it)

not every solution must be made by staff.

guides for other browsers pending

to open the <details> tags here, that is, the small arrows, click the arrows (or the rest of the line, this may only work for some browsers). they move towards pointing down, and expand into text.

Firefox PC guide 1. go to https://userstyles.world/style/7690/cohost-theme-customizer
  1. click "install stylus", it opens a github page. Click the Mozilla/Firefox Addons link. click install.

  2. navigate back to step 1. click "install" below the screenshots.

  3. click 'install style' in the upper left

  4. enable dark mode in the userscript interface it brings up. manage it's settings through Stylus in the settings menu, addons category.

Firefox nightly Android guide, also applies to the PWA if you don't want to use firefox for anything else
  1. install the Nightly version of Android Firefox, which is the experimental version of Android Firefox

  2. go to https://userstyles.world/style/7690/cohost-theme-customizer

  3. click "install stylus", it opens a github page. Click the Mozilla/Firefox Addons link. click install.

  4. navigate back to step 1. click "install userscript".

  5. enable dark mode in the userscript interface it brings up. manage it's settings through Stylus in the settings menu, addons category.

but note that until next firefox update it can only install "recommended addons" without a very technical workaround. that's unimportant here, just a heads up.

Chrome PC guide 1. open the link in the post, https://userstyles.world/style/7690/cohost-theme-customizer
  1. click 'get stylus', it'll open a github page. Open the chrome store link https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/stylus/clngdbkpkpeebahjckkjfobafhncgmne and install it

  2. go back to the https://userstyles.world/style/7690/cohost-theme-customizer page and click 'install'

  3. in the style, click 'install style' in the upper left

  4. manage through addons menu

iOS may need more work look at blep's comment, I don't have things I can install it on.

(if this doesn't work for you or you want to add images try sending a comment so i can fix it instead of yelling, thanks! I've already had enough of that today for things I took time out of my life to offer help with)

using the theme customizer shrinks the line spacing on posts and makes text uncomfortable to read unless you edit the userstyle and remove or comment out line 660. @aune helped me find this out

https://cohost.org/mattenaps/post/3458765-this-is-so-good-jus

make sure you edit it from the gear while on the Installed Styles menu! (url should end in "/manage.html") Changes made while still on the install page (where you can see all the code) did not apply for me.

if anyone is up to making a walkthrough for installing this on various systems, it would probably be helpful for folks who need a dark mode for accessibility reasons, until the time an official dark mode exists

yeah give me a few and i will, it's two step on firefox nightly android but I'll check desktop chrome and ff, I don't know how to do blep's with this on safari because I haven't loaded interactive userscripts before

well, I tried, and then got yelled at for not realizing people wouldn't figure out a details tag because of the other arrow-based interface elements out there, so idk if I'm going to go through the effort next time of putting aside 45m to do 3 browsers worth next time
