The nature of panty shots in anime/etc has always kinda baffled me. Even in the context of adult women where it's, at least, less creepy, it's still not sexy or even titillating. I guess it's meant to be like a voyeuristic thing? Sure when I was 13 and accidentally saw a crushes bra it was that sort of embarrassed trilling feeling of "I saw something I shouldn't have", but that's not really the context that panty shots usually have. It often just feels like "look at this hot ass I drew!"
And that can be fine! I like a good drawn hot ass, I've made a few in my day. But those weren't drawn up in the same.... creepy vaneer.
Yeah. For me, there's gotta be at least some context. Like if a character is checking out another, even in a voyeuristic way, then I'm all for it. But if it's like here's so hot people doing mundane unsexy things look how the breast boobily across the room, I'm like nah, thanks.
There are more creative ways to express lust through perspective and defaulting to this just seems limiting and dull at best.
there's definitely a (probably large) subset of yuri that feels like.... catered towards a certain predatory male gaze in a way that sucks.
