honestly one of the more disturbing elements of the "porn addiction" talking point propagating through social media, aside from the fact that it's total bunk, is how opaquely these people believe that having an addiction makes you subhuman and deserving of harassment.

"porn addiction" is something that the innocent must be protected from, unless you have a porn addiction, in which case that's a moral failing, you are not innocent, and you deserve to be discarded.

evangelical Christianity has been poisoning psychology for decades and I don't think the mainstream media has really wanted to notice, because any inquiry into evangelical infiltration of professional life has been met with fierce defensiveness about "religious freedom". and c'mon, porn addiction? that's been a gospel-radio talking point for how long now? ~Chara

worse, there are lots of evangelicals out there doing "studies" where the only result the "researchers" aren't willing to accept any answer other than "porn bad", poisoning the well for people who are trying to do actual research.

A thought I've had is like, yes someone can have an unhealthy relationship with media, including porn, but I think flattening these unhealthy connections between us and the media we engage with into simply "addiction" does us a disservice in understanding what that connection is and how to change it. Not to mention the obvious, the that rhetoric that addiction is a moral failing that precludes addicted people from being treated with humanity.

The porn addiction complaint is just a weird mash between puritanism and that whole "personal responsibility" guff. It bothers me when people who's beliefs completely contradict that just parrot it, because it's useful to make fun of people you don't like by accusing them of being too horny.

It's mostly the weird christofascist deontology stemming directly from the patriarchal need to control bodies, usually female or otherwise not male. They are obsessed with sex, that's why there's so much "moralising" though mainly it functions as a smokescreen for other horrible abuses.
