Tangentially to this, I hate the way discourse has absorbed liberalism's aversion to loss and grief. We can't admit we've taken an L, things suck, and something irreplaceable has been lost. We're always "fighting" and never "have fought and lost". The latter would imply modern society is less than moral and excellent, because any problem is fixable to a moral and excellent society.
Vulnerable groups get screwed over constantly in recent and novel ways. But without the data, academic papers, and books that come with 20 years of hindsight, any new tragedy is liable to be discarded as "not that bad."
When do we get to grieve for anything? When do we get to all admit we've been hurt in lifechanging and soul-shaping ways?
