(I said 1 EST but actually I need to get out so it's going up now) See title; this is a recommendation post for anyone who watched and loved Bravern and doesn't know where to go to find works on that particular vibe wavelength. I can't help you on the BL side, but I can sure help on the cool robot side.

Which is funny, because if I truly cared about the numbers, or listened to anybody about "what works", I probably wouldn't write about super robot anime.

When I was doing toys for ANN all those years ago, I frequently got in trouble for covering a) robots or b) too-old properties like FOTNS or Saint Seiya. Like, I got put on "no old stuff" moratorium for Saint Seiya.

Well anyway, write what you like writing and folks will notice. One day.

Thanks! Bravern got the robot bug in me so I watched Gaogaigar, which was great, and was just wondering where to start with Mazinger cuz I watched a little bit of Shin Mazinger and it was too referential to feel like a good starting point (even if it's got not one but two absolute banger OPs, which can really sustain a show).

Vs GGD is such a banger recommendation, you're absolutely right. It just gets the full appeal and juice of Mazinger on TV in a real good, concise package.

I'm hoping that Grendizer U later this year also follows up on Bravern's example and has the heated drama between men lmao. Having both Okouchi and Fukuda on the same show is promising an Experience to remember and I hope neither of them shy away from Duke and Koji's vibes.

Obari has all but confirmed that Bravern is basically his own personal OC. I get the feeling that during Gridman there was some joking back and forth with him about the show using a lot of Obari-esque poses, and I feel like that inspired him to really roll his fucking sleeves up and get back into it. Like just make a damn masterclass on the idea.

He didn't! The director of GGG is Yoshitomo Yonetani. He is most recently known for directing the Food Wars anime adaptation. For truly unhinged work by Yonetani I recommend Vatican Miracle Examiner (novel adaptation) or Enma-kun Mera-mera (manga adaptation. filthy).
