The Y-Wing is the workhorse of the rebel fleet; it's not quick or flashy, but it gets the job done. The armor on this ship is extensive and the shields will protect you from just about anything, which is good - because you won't be going anywhere fast.

"the armor on this ship is extensive"

THE Y-WING?

THE SHIP THAT THEY REGULARLY FLY WITH THE ABSOLUTE BARE MINIMUM OF PARTS?

THE SHIP WHERE THE ICONIC VERSION OF IT LITERALLY HAS HOLES IN THE STRUTS LARGE ENOUGH TO DRIVE AN ENTIRE TRUCK THROUGH?

NOT ONLY IS THE Y-WING NOT EXTENSIVELY ARMORED IT'S NOT EVEN EXTENSIVELY ENTACT

THE ARMOR ON THIS SHIP FELL OFF BEFORE MOST OF THE PILOTS IN THE BATTLE OF YAVIN WERE BORN AND THEY CAN'T AFFORD TO REPLACE ANY OF IT

@love

PLEASE FIND ATTACHED A HELPFUL ILLUSTRATION OF WHAT A Y-WING WOULD LOOK LIKE IF IT HAD ARMOR ON IT INSTEAD OF BEING PART OF A RAGTAG FLEET THAT CAN ONLY AFFORD TO FLY SHIPS WINNIE-THE-POOH STYLE

@love

better hope the force is with you because like 70% of the ship sure isn't

what you are describing is basically the BTL-B model, which did some limited usage in the Clone Wars as a ship of the Republic Navy. The later "naked" models used in the Rebellion era are BTL-A4s or BTL-S3s, and supposedly they were stripped of extraneous armor in order to facilitate easier maintenance, which I think is a very funny answer. it's like taking the hood off of your car in order to make it easier to change the oil

so here's what I think happened: it looks like the design of the struts is intended to evoke a jet engine and afterburner (which are similarly spindly) and do some shit with like focusing the ion exhaust to improve combustion efficiency or whatever; I imagine they're noncritical to the operation of the ship, though they might impair its performance characteristics if damaged

imo also possible that refits to the engine between the clone wars and the time of the galactic civil war improved its "non-afterburning" performance enough that those things are basically just vestigial and kept there more for sentimental reasons than anything

love this shit so much, this is the exact kind of extrapolative worldbuilding that I wish the prequels did more—you can figure that this version of it exists just by looking at the original Y-Wing model, but it's still cool to see, you know? pretty sure when they say "easier to maintain," they mean "don't gotta replace scorched hull panels if you just remove the hull"
