Dragon Quest Monsters 2 had a nice theme of this! If you told your monsters what to do directly, and they were too "wild", they'd just disregard it. They build trust by you letting them do what they wanna do (and feeding them a lot of meat). During tournaments, you can't give any instructions, and your critters have to handle things themselves.
It was really fun, as a kid!
